Idempotency key

A caller-generated string sent with a request so that a retry of the same request is recognised as a repeat and not performed twice. The server stores the key with the result of the first attempt and replays that result for every later request carrying the key. It is what stops a timed-out payment from being charged again when the client retries.

The pitfall is the key's lifetime: once it expires, the same retry becomes a new request. Pick a window longer than your longest client retry schedule, and say what it is in the API documentation.

Work & Leadership

Teams, on-call rotations, hiring and the habits that survive a quarter — the human half of a technical organisation.

What counts as a Work & Leadership piece

The human half of a technical organisation, reported with the same suspicion of unsourced claims as the engineering desks. On-call rotations and what they cost the people in them, hiring loops and what they actually measure, handover and documentation, the difference between a team that is small and a team that is simply understaffed. Leadership advice that cannot be tied to a practice somebody runs on a Monday morning does not get published here.

This desk avoids two genres on purpose. The first is the founder profile, in which a method is inferred backwards from an outcome. The second is the management listicle, which works by leaving out the conditions under which the advice is false. Where the desk describes a practice, it says who runs it, at roughly what size of team, and what it is a trade against — because every working habit that survives a quarter is paid for somewhere, usually in somebody’s calendar.
